We all age, it’s a given – but if the effects of aging are making you feel down about your appearance, there are some steps you can take to reduce their impact.
Wrinkles and fine lines in the skin occur when facial movements stretch and pull the skin. As we age, our skin becomes less elastic, so it starts to drape differently in response to muscle movements, leading to the formation of lines and wrinkles.
What is Botox?
Botox is a temporary non-surgical treatment that is given by injection. Botox can only be administered by a trained practitioner. It lasts three to four months.
How could cosmetic injections help rejuvenate my face?
Botox is a protein that blocks nerve signals to the muscles that contract and relax in the face. This will soften fine lines, prevent wrinkles from deepening and improve the drape of the skin to give a more youthful look.
The effects of Botox can be subtle, and a skilled Botox practitioner will achieve natural-looking results for a rejuvenated appearance.
Which parts of the face is Botox commonly used on?
Botox is commonly administered to the upper part of the face, such as the forehead, between the brows and at the corner of the eyes.
It can also be used to treat the mouth – for example, lines around the lips and at the corners of the mouth. It can be used on the chin and jaw, too.
Where can I get Botox?
Botox can only be given by a qualified practitioner at a face-to-face appointment and after a thorough consultation. The purified protein, which acts as a neurotoxin to freeze muscles, is injected into the skin. It’s important to get your Botox treatments at a reputable centre, like our Botox Clinic in Ottawa. We have Botox clinics in other parts of Canada too – use our clinics page to find the one nearest you.
What happens at a Botox appointment?
Most Botox procedures are very quick – usually under an hour. The practitioner will ask you some questions to find out what you would like to achieve with your Botox treatment, and they will check that you are suitable for Botox. They will also explain the aftercare for the site of your Botox injections.
The practitioner will prepare your skin for the injections by cleansing it, and then they will decide where the injections will go.
What does a Botox treatment feel like?
Botox is given using tiny needles. There may be a little pain – some people describe it as a bit of a pinch at the injection site. But many people find the treatment to be painless.
For some areas and some patients, the practitioner may use a topical anaesthetic to relieve any discomfort.
Sometimes people get a little redness or soreness at the Botox site. This can be relieved with a cool pack.
What happens after a Botox treatment?
You can go back to most normal routine activities after your Botox treatment. But your practitioner will explain at your Botox appointment if there are any activities you should avoid on that day – for example, sun beds and saunas.
